How to Check Airflow from Your Vents

If your home isn’t cooling the way it used to, or certain rooms always feel warmer than others, weak airflow is often the reason. The good news is you can do a quick check yourself in just a few minutes.

Step 1: Make sure your AC is running
Set your thermostat to “cool” and drop the temperature a few degrees so the system kicks on. You want steady airflow while you’re checking.

Step 2: Start with the closest vents
Go to a vent near your thermostat or main living area and hold your hand a few inches away. You should feel a consistent stream of air, not barely there, not cutting in and out.

Step 3: Work your way through the house
Check each room one by one. Pay attention to any vents that feel noticeably weaker than others. That difference is usually where the problem starts.

Step 4: Look for simple blockages
Take a quick look around each vent. Furniture, rugs, or even curtains can block airflow more than people realize.

Step 5: Check the vent position
Some vents have small levers or sliders. Make sure they’re fully open—partially closed vents can make a room feel like it’s not getting any air at all.

Step 6: Take a look at your air filter
If airflow feels weak throughout the house, your filter could be the issue. A clogged filter restricts air before it even reaches your vents.

What to pay attention to:

  • A room that never seems to cool down
  • One vent barely blowing while others feel normal
  • Airflow that feels weak across the entire house

What not to do:

Avoid removing vent covers or trying to look inside the ductwork. That can cause damage and won’t give you a clear answer anyway. Also, never close vents off to try and push more air. This is something that will not help and can cause more issues down the road.

When it’s time to call a professional:
If one or more vents have little to no airflow, or the problem doesn’t improve after checking for blockages and changing the filter, there may be a deeper issue like a duct restriction or system imbalance.
