Whether it is time to replace your HVAC unit or not, upgrading to a smart thermostat is the right move in today's world. With a smart thermostat, you can control your air conditioning or heating whether you are home or away. No more worrying about whether you left the thermostat too low or too high, as you can check in on it whenever you want.
Smart thermostats don't operate on batteries like older thermostats. They need more power than batteries can offer. That is where the C-wire comes in.
What is a C-wire, and what if you don't have one? No worries, the Dailey Company has solutions to update you to a new fully functioning smart thermostat.
Thermostat C-wires Explained
The C in C-wire stands for common. Generally black or blue, the C-wire is the wire that serves as the path of continuous 24-volt power for a smart thermostat. It is possible that if the wiring in your home is older, you may not have a C-wire.
For any thermostat, four different wires are used, with a possible fifth, the C-wire. The others are:
- The green wire, G, signals to turn on your HVAC unit's fan.
- The R-wire, usually red, runs the power.
- The Y-wire, which is yellow, signals the cooling system.
- W controls the heat, and the W-wire is white.
The color coding is for making the hookup of a thermostat easy. But, because these are electric wires, care should always be used for installation, maintenance, and repairs. Someone previously could have used a different color. Working with any form of electricity is NOT a DIY project, and that is why calling a professional for any electrical issue, including the hookup of a new thermostat, is the safest move.
Is Having a Missing Wire Bad?
The simplest way to discover whether your system has a C-wire is to open the thermostat and see if the C-terminal is in use or empty. Not having a C-wire is not a game changer. There are ways in which a trained technician can still hook up a new smart thermostat and have it properly function.
Options If There's No C-wire
Even if the terminal has an empty space, it doesn't mean there is no C-wire. The wire may be tucked away behind the dry walling by itself or with other unused wires. Your Dailey Company technician will know where to look. Whether there is a designated C-wire or another unused wire that could be used as a C-wire, your technician can properly hook it up between the thermostat and your HVAC system's circuit breaker.
Another option is to use the G-wire instead if your HVAC system is compatible with this option. This solution does end your being able to run the fan by itself without air conditioning or heat. For many, this is not a problem, but your technicians will check with you before moving forward.
As a third choice, there are adapters available that can split one wire into two. This requires moving wires around and is always best left to a professional. Again, your technician will discuss this with you.
