What to Do When Your Garbage Disposal Stops Working

What to Do When Your Garbage Disposal Stops Working

A garbage disposal that stops working doesn’t always mean it needs to be replaced. Most of the time, it’s a simple issue like a jam, a reset, or a power problem.

Here’s how to work through it step by step.

Step 1: Pay Attention to What It’s Doing

Turn the switch on briefly after confirming it’s safe:

  • If you hear a humming sound, the motor is likely jammed.
  • If there’s no sound at all, it’s likely an electrical issue.
  • If it clicks and shuts off, the overload protection has tripped.

This helps narrow down what you’re dealing with.

Step 2: Turn Everything Off

Before you do anything:

  • Turn off the disposal switch.
  • Unplug it under the sink if it has a plug.
  • If it’s hardwired, switch off the breaker.

Make sure there is no power going to the unit before checking anything inside or underneath it.

Step 3: Press the Reset Button

Most garbage disposals have a small reset button on the bottom.

  • Press the button firmly.
  • Wait about 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Turn it back on and test it again.

If it was overloaded, this will usually get it working again.

Step 4: Check for a Jam

If you hear a hum but the blades aren’t spinning:

  • Insert an Allen wrench into the bottom slot.
  • Turn it back and forth slowly to free the impeller.
  • Keep turning until it moves more freely.

Do not force anything with tools that don’t fit properly.

Step 5: Remove Any Blockages

If it’s still not working:

  • Use tongs or pliers to remove any visible debris.
  • Common causes include bones, utensils, or fibrous food like celery or potato peels.

Once cleared, run cold water and test it again.

Step 6: Check the Power Source

If it still won’t run:

  • Check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker.
  • Reset any GFCI outlets nearby.
  • Make sure the unit is securely plugged in.

Sometimes the issue is just a tripped breaker or outlet, not the disposal itself.

When to Call a Plumber

You should bring in a professional if:

  • The disposal still won’t turn on after resetting.
  • The breaker keeps tripping.
  • You notice a burning smell.
  • The unit is leaking from the bottom.
  • It keeps giving you problems and is older.

At that point, it may be more cost-effective to repair or replace it.
